NEW YORK (February 7, 2022) — As we enter the third year of the pandemic, job satisfaction has taken on an unprecedented priority. To better understand how employees are feeling amid 'The Great Resignation,' new research from TopResume, the world's largest resume-writing service, reveals that simply getting a paycheck doesn't buy happiness. In honor of Valentine's Day this year, TopResume asked 510 employed professionals, “What's your relationship with your current job?” and today announced the results of its nationwide survey to uncover how they describe their availability.

The survey presented employees with four options to express their commitment to their current job:

  • Open Relationship: “I have a job, but I'm open to new opportunities.”

  • Committed Relationship: “I love my job and am not looking for other opportunities.”

  • It's Complicated: “I don't love my job, but I'm not sure if it's time to jump ship.”

  • Unspecified: “I'm unsure how I feel about my current job.”

Below are the results:

TopResume Workplace Survey: Relationship with Job

Only seven percent of respondents describe themselves as being in a “Committed Relationship” with their employer, while the majority of employees are open to hearing about new opportunities (72%) or have fallen out of love with their jobs but are conflicted about breaking up (13%).

Furthermore, those who described themselves as being in an “Open Relationship” or a “Complicated Relationship” with their employers were asked, “What matters most when considering a new job?” and were presented with eight options. “Company Culture” was the top priority, garnering 30% of the responses, while “Salary and Bonus” (25%) and “Flexible Schedule” (17%) came in second and third place, respectively.

“With such a strong, candidate-driven job market — especially after the economic uncertainty many faced during the pandemic — it's unsurprising that most professionals are exploring their options,” said Amanda Augustine, career advice expert for TopResume, as well as a certified professional career coach (CPCC) and certified professional resume writer (CPRW). “The most successful professionals are always open to considering new opportunities that align with their long-term goals. If the past two years have taught us anything, it's that we need to be prepared for the unexpected. Even those who are happily committed to their current jobs should keep their resume and LinkedIn profile updated and remain active with their professional networks, as you never know when you might want — or need — to make a change.”

In addition, Augustine urges employers to focus their energies on recruitment and retention in order to remain competitive in this candidate-driven market. “Employers will need to double-down their efforts to both retain their best employees and attract new talent. Conducting 'stay interviews' with top performers to learn why they remain with the company — and what might cause them to leave — is a great place to start. In addition, employers should evaluate how their employees' needs have changed as a result of the pandemic — and what that means for the company and its culture moving forward.

Last year, TopResume unveiled its Job Seeker Sentiment Index, which uniquely measures, on a monthly basis, job seekers' opinions on current conditions, as well as future job-market and workplace expectations — an industry-first. Since April 2021, TopResume has been polling its active U.S. job seekers in order to evaluate both their confidence about the job market and also their sense of overall job security.
